Florian's Best Buy| The Century-old Traditional Doge's Breakfast

August 12, 2016

The rising temperature of the early summer days critically reduces the probabilities of having a lay-in. Eating a good and healthy breakfast is enough to feel more than full to the brim. In Venice there is a century-old tradition called Doge's Breakfast and its origin is specifically linked to Venetian aristocracy.

In the center of Venice, St Mark’s Square and St Petronio’s Square have been elegantly and cleverly combined together. Here stands Venice’s most magnificent building – The Doge’s Palace. Also known as Duke’s Palace, it once was the official government building of the prosperous and powerful Republic of Venice, while today is a world-famous art museum.

This magnificent building brings together Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance style, standing like a fortress next to the shore. The palace façade is elegant and graceful with a white and pink carved stone loggia situated above a row of arched doors. The alternation between the emptiness below and the fullness above perfectly corresponds to the movement of Venice gently floating on the water. The building is completely different from the adjacent Saint Mark’s Basilica, but they complement each other forming a magnificent mansion.

The Moorish rhombus-shaped patterns on the façade and the Gothic sharp-pointed arches and columns are wonderfully combined, creating a graceful and neat decoration on all four sides of the palace.

This beautiful Gothic door dating back to the 15th century and adjacent to Saint Mark's Basilica was once the official entrance to the Doge's Palace.

The famous 16th century “Scala dei Giganti” in the courtyard.

The large oil painting depicting a heavenly scene in the Council Chamber, where the entire ceiling is covered with frescos, can be considered as the representative work of the peak of Venetian art.

There is no need to go on a long journey
